What do you need?
A professional Fibrehand explains how to fit a plaster ceiling rose. He talks you step by step through the process of ceiling rose installation, from making sure the electrics are turned off; drilling or enlarging the hole for wires, applying adhesive and screws to hold it up, right through to filling the fitted ceiling rose ready for decoration.
Fitting a plaster ceiling rose, particularly a large one, is a two-person job as they can be heavy and difficult to manoeuvre above your head. Two people mean the risk of dropping and damaging plaster ceiling roses during installation is greatly reduced. Make sure you have a safe and stable platform for both of you to work on.
Step 1:
The first task before installation is to check that the electricity is turned off, particularly in the vicinity of the rose. Safety first! If you don’t know how to isolate the electrics around the area you are working we strongly suggest you consult a qualified electrician before you tidy up the wiring ready for the installation of your rose.
Step 2:
The next step is to find a joist and mark its location on the ceiling so that when you come to screw the rose in place later you know where to get a solid fix. You are now ready to prepare the rose for installation.
Step 3:
If you have a ceiling rose with a hole in it make sure the hole is wide enough to slide the wires through. If there is no hole in your rose, don’t worry just drill one wide enough to take your wires. Although plaster is fragile and can be damaged if knocked, it isn’t brittle and can be drilled.
Step 4:
After drilling, add adhesive to the back of the rose. Dab the adhesive around the edges of the rose and on surfaces that will be coming in contact with the ceiling. This is best done at floor level.
When your rose is prepared then carefully climb onto your platform with your ceiling rose. Slide the rose over the electric wires and if your rose is patterned, then align it how you want to see it in your room.
Step 5:
When you’re happy with how the ceiling rose is positioned then start to counter sink your screws through the rose and into the ceiling. Make sure at least one of your screws goes into the joist that you marked out earlier. Three or four screws, in combination with adhesive, will secure all but the very largest ceiling roses (which might require an extra couple of screws to take the additional weight).
Step 6:
Once the rose is securely fastened to the ceiling, scrap off any additional adhesive with a scraper being careful not to damage the rose. Dampen down the ceiling rose using a wet brush before filling the ceiling joint and screw holes with plaster of paris (casting plaster) or a filler. Remember to fill the screw heads as well, taking off the excess to create a smooth surface with a scraper or busk and finally wipe off any excess plaster with a wet brush.
Step 7:
Once all the screw holes and the ceiling joint are filled, wiped down and dry the ceiling rose is then ready for decoration.
